The Park:

Gombe Stream National Park is the smallest of the National Parks in Tanzania with a forest running of only 20 square miles across the shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is located in western Kigoma Region and is about 10 miles north of Kigoma. The range is well distinguished by the steep valleys, grasslands, tropical forests, etc. and is accessible through the boat only. The place is also well known as the location where the famous Dr.Goodball did her behavioural research on Chimpanzee.

The Wildlife Present:

The park offers the presence of rich variety of wildlife that includes Chimpanzees and primates which are olive baboons and red colobus. The red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys are also seen here. There are also many species of snakes(around 11), hippos, leopards, etc. that are found in the park. The park is also home to a number of bird species, approx. over 200 of them and bush pigs. The Lake Tanganyika has almost more than 95 kinds of colourful fish to be seen.

Things to do:

The park offers a number of adventures to experience. Chimpanzee trekking, hiking, swimming and snorkelling are one of the main attractions of the park. The spectacular waterfall and Janes Peak offers fantastic views. Don't forget to see the stunning sunsets, and a swim in Lake Tanganyika. Make a visit to the Jane Good all Institute and the site of “Dr Livingstone I presume” at Ujij.

Accommodations:

The Gombe Tours offer various accommodations for your stay on a trip. One of the accommodations is the “Gombe Bandas”which is a government owned, self-catering low-budget rest house accommodation. The other one is the “Gombe Forest lodge” which is the refurbished Gombe Luxury Tented Camp where you can enjoy every aspect of a holiday expedition and they are campsites on the lakeshore.

When to visit:

The best time to visit this park id during the month of June to October when there is little to no rainfall and it is easiest to track the Chimpanzees as they stay lower on the slopes. There is a lot of sunshine and low risk of mosquitoes which make the time all the more favourable to visit. During the months of April and May, most of the lodges are closed and from November to April, it’s not at all a great idea to visit the place as these being the wet season months, mosquitoes are abundant and the forest tracks are more slippery and difficult to walk. Also, the main attractions, the Chimpanzees would also be difficult to track as they move higher up the slopes during this season. However, the air is clear without any haze and you may experience watching a lot of migratory birds..

Conclusion:

OMBE STREAM NATIONAL PARK is a unique place to visit that offers you to get close to Wild animals in their natural habitat and environment and watch their daily life. It is an aquatic wonderland where you can swim, snorkel and enjoy watching over 200 species of fish. It is really magical to observe the spectacular views that make the visit all the more thrilling and a memorable experience.
